The 2001 Staff Survey provided BWH with a snap-shot image of employee satisfaction at a point in time. Now, equipped with feedback from employees, BWH has a lens with which to focus in on areas that need improvement. BWH asked you to give them a picture of how the institution looked, and now that the image has been developed, all employees have the unique opportunity to take their best shot at improving BWH.
After a successful Staff Survey process, BWH has collected and consolidated data from thousands of employees and is now using this feedback to shape hospital improvement efforts. The first step in the improvement process is assembling Staff Survey Action Teams - groups of employees that will be responsible for implementing staff-driven improvements based on survey data. Recruitment for Staff Survey Action Teams is currently underway and all are encouraged and invited to participate.
Building upon the first Staff Survey follow-up initiative, the hospital will once again recruit members into multidisciplinary teams, targeting broad themes such as Communication, Teamwork and Leadership. These “panoramic” teams will take on comprehensive, hospital-wide goals that affect the entire fabric of the BWH community.
In addition, participation on a “panoramic” team gives staff the opportunity to meet and work with colleagues from throughout the organization. As a result of the work of the 2000 Survey Action Teams, several new initiatives were launched at BWH. The Teams were responsible for bringing Travelling Town Meetings to BWH, developing a Leadership Competency Model and Respect campaign, and creating a Patient-Family Resource Guide. Other staff-driven improvements included an enhanced T-pass subsidy program and the employee-referral bonus program.
To complement the “panoramic” teams, this year, more concentrated and acutely focused action teams will be assembled. Smaller in size and focus, these teams will be comprised of staff from specific areas such as off-site locations, single floors, departments or shifts. These “telephoto” teams will take on very specific issues identified by staff who share a common location or role at BWH.
“By creating two different types of teams, our goal is to get more people involved and a greater diversity of opinions, feedback and views filtered into the survey follow-up process,” said Martha Pyle Farrell, director of Operational Planning and Program Improvement and the chair of this year’s Survey Action Teams. “We are also trying to bring the Survey Action Teams to employees at BWH, knowing it is difficult for people who are off-campus or work on the second or third shifts to attend meetings,” she added. “It is vital that we make this process more flexible and accessible to any employee who wishes to be involved in how the hospital approaches change and develops solutions to challenges identified in the surveys.”
Employees who are interested in joining a Sur-vey Action Team or who would like to organize a specialized “telephoto” team for their unit, floor, department, etc. should contact their managers or Farrell at ext. 2-5741 or via email (mpfarrell@partners.org), complete the enclosed form or fill out a form online at BWH Pike Notes (http://healthcare.partners.org/bwhintranet).
